field trip- Sierra Pelona Travertine Onyx claim

Place to meet:7:30 -8:00 A.M.
K.C.Coral Restaurant Boron Main Street across from the museum for
breakfeast.
**9:30- Market parking lot on Clay Mine Rd 1 mile north of State
Route 58-Clay Mine Rd exit is by North Edwards AFB about 20 miles
east of Mojave.

Sierra Pelona Travertine Onyx claim near No. Edwards
material to collect: colorful travertine onyx, jaspers, agates, honey
onyx, possibly blue onyx
combinations of red, gold, black and white in layers of varying
thickness. Also to be found is silver onyx. Can be made into spheres,
bookends, cabs, etc.Scattered agates range in colr from clear to reds
to
multi-colors. Jaspers are varied in colors as well.
On site dry camping available.
In the general area is also Castle Butte with various agates, jaspers,
petrified palm wood, bloodstone and chapinite.
4 wheel drive not necessary unless inclement weather as parts of the
road is moderately sandy but passable in passenger cars with caution.
High clearance is the recommended vehicle type. Driveable for campers
as
well with careand caution through a few rough & sandy spots.
Food, water, supplies available at market at meeting place. Gas up
either at Kramer Junction or Mojave depending on whether arriving from
east or west.
Dress for the weather as this is high desert climate at approx 2500
foot
altitude. The onyx is hard rock mining: bring shovels, chisels,
hammers,
buckets Surface material is available but best material is dug out.
Many pits on the claim exposing many veins and boulders. This is
desert
tortoise area so drive with caution and do not disturb or go near the
tortoises. If you do and they pee that could kill them. Enjoy from a
distance
Hold harmless forms are necessary.
People comming from Bakersfield will meet at the shop 2225 River Blvd
